£38,000 following failure to prescribe calcium tablets

E v Dr G & Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust (2006)

Aged 61 Mrs E was advised by her hospital doctors that she needed a course of steroids (Prednisolone) for glaucoma.

Mrs E went onto suffer from osteoporosis and sustained three spinal wedge fractures. Mrs E was told that her osteoporosis had developed as a result of her prescription of steroids and that she should have been prescribed calcium tablets at the same time as her steroids.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was E's case that her GP and hospital doctors should have prescribed calcium tablets and that had she been prescribed calcium her osteoporosis and fractures would have been avoided.

OUTCOME

Liability was accepted by the hospital in part. The case was settled with a payment of compensation of £38,000
