FACTS

Mrs W had a history of Crohn's disease and had undergone removal of part of her ileum.

Aged 40 Mrs W underwent hysterectomy for fibroids.

Although pre operative antibiotics were prescribed they were not administered.

Mrs W developed infection leading to a requirement for repeat surgical procedures, debridement, and ileostomy.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was Mrs W's case that it was negligent of the hospital doctors to fail to administer pre operative antibiotics.

CAUSATION

It was Mrs W's case that had she received pre operative antibiotics her infection and subsequent complications would have been avoided.

OUTCOME

Settlement was agreed at £42,000 before trial.
