Athetoid (dyskinetic) cerebral palsy is caused by a short severe episode of lack of oxygen to the infant brain most commonly in the minutes before birth.
Failures of the obstetric team to recognise signs of foetal distress lead to a failure to make sure the baby is delivered before suffering a damaging period of lack of oxygen (anoxia / hypoxia).
Children with athetoid cerebral palsy often have normal intelligence however their bodies are affected by problems with control and movement of muscles. Muscle tone can either be too high or too low leading to writhing movements of the limbs. Problems with speech and swallowing are frequent due to hyperactivity of the facial, tongue, and throat muscles.
Please do read about how we helped D and his family succeed in a compensation claim for clinical negligence which caused his Athetoid cerebral palsy. We promise to investigate the cause of your child's cerebral palsy at no cost to you.
Compensation is designed to meet your child's needs for life. Payments for the additional care and assistance your child needs are made annually and guaranteed to meet the likely increasing cost of care for life. These payments will enable you and your child to employ a professional team of carers.
There are also compensation payments to allow you to move to a house suitable for extension and adaptation to meet your child's needs, meet the additional running costs of such a house, to provide suitable cars to transport your child in their wheelchair together with the rest of your family and carers, to meet your child's therapy and importantly communication and technology needs, to provide compensation for the pain, suffering, and frustration your child experiences and to reimburse you for both your additional time in providing care and additional expenses you and your family have incurred.
