The Effects Of Birth Asphyxia

There are a number of reasons why birth asphyxia may occur:

•    If the mother has heart or respiratory problems or is not breathing regularly after anaesthesia oxygen in the blood will be reduced
•    Low blood pressure in mother
•    Placental abruption
•    Compression of umbilical cord restricting the blood flow
•    If the uterus is not relaxed it stops oxygen circulating to the placenta
•    Anaemia or low blood cell count
•    Low blood pressure
•    Shock
•    Heart disease
•    Lung disease

The condition affects the baby's blood flow, which can limit blood getting to the organs and tissues and lead to improper cell function or serious damage.  The organs that are usually affected are the heart, brain, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and lungs.
