Aged 49 G attended hospital A&E with blood in his urine and pain on passing water. The hospital asked his GP to refer him to a urologist. No referral took place. G continued to suffer from blood in his urine and 15 months later reattended hospital where he was diagnosed with infection and his GP informed. The GP then referred G to a urologist who made a diagnosis of bladder cancer. G underwent removal of his bladder, prostate, and urethra and formation of an ileal conduit to allow passage of urine. G also received chemotherapy.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was G's case his GP was negligent in failing to refer him to a urologist as recommended by the hospital.

CAUSATION

It was G's case that had he been referred to a urologist 15 months earlier he would not have needed extensive treatment and would have retained his bladder, and urethra and not needed chemotherapy.

OUTCOME

The case was settled for £220,000.
