Bladder injury during hysterectomy

G v Tower Hamlets HA (1996)

Mrs G underwent abdominal hysterectomy and removal of her left ovary during which a stitch was placed in her bladder.

Mrs G developed a vesicovaginal fistula and was left with leakage of urine.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was Mrs G's case that the stitch had been negligently placed in her bladder leading to injury and that it was negligent to fail to identify the mistake at the time of the operation (which would have led to successful immediate remedial treatment).

OUTCOME

Compensation of £75,000 was awarded by the Court
