Bowel damage during sterilisation

B v North West Health Authority (1990)

During sterilisation procedure Mrs B suffered damage to her small intestine leading to peritonitis leading to requirement for hysterectomy, scarring, adhesions, and abdominal pain.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was Mrs B's case that it was negligent to damage her small intestine during sterilisation and negligent to fail to identify and repair the damage at the time of sterilisation.

OUTCOME

Compensation was awarded by the Court in the sum of £112,000
