Types Of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer can be invasive or non invasive, lobular or ductal.  There are other very much rarer types of breast cancer, however the vast majority are lobular or ductal.

Invasive cancers are ones which have spread to surrounding tissue, non invasive cancers affect only either the lobes or ducts in which they have started and have not spread to other tissue.

Treatment and prognosis very much depend on the type of cancer (ductal or lobular), whether the cancer has progressed to being invasive, and the grade of tumour (rate of growth).

Breast Cancer Misdiagnosis & Treatment Delays

The delay in treatment or misdiagnosis might occur at any stage of investigation and treatment of your breast cancer.  The most frequent concern we deal with is where the General Practitioner (GP) reassures the patient that a breast lump does not need to be investigated by a specialist.  Having reassured the patient, there can be a delay of years before the patient becomes concerned enough to ask the GP to look at the lump again, often with catastrophic consequences.  Even when referred for specialist examination, patients can be falsely reassured and the breast cancer missed.

Examination, ultrasound, mammogram, fine needle aspiration, and biopsy are increasingly invasive procedures.  Sometimes tests for breast cancer are not undertaken when they should be, sometimes results are misinterpreted, and sometimes results are simply mislaid leading to a failure to diagnose and treat breast cancer.
