What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
Deep vein thrombosis, also known as DVT, is the development of a blood clot within a deep vein in the body. Deep veins are the much larger veins buried within the muscles of calves and thighs and are not the veins you can see just below your skin.
What are the risks of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
It is the responsibility of a medical professional to comprehensively assess and diagnose patients with signs of deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis can occur under a number of circumstances, however the most common are:
Immobility and Hospital Stay Patients:
Patients who are immobile or are recovering in hospital, usually after surgery or injury, are at the risk of forming clots due to their slow-flowing blood. If the patient is medically neglected they are at risk of developing venous thromboembolism. Venous thromboembolism occurs when a blockage within the vein causes it to dislodge and travel within the blood until it becomes stuck in narrower blood vessels of the body.
In order to combat this risk it is recommended that immobilised patients should be considered by the medical team for routine prophylactic anticoagulation and monitored throughout as there is also an increased risk of bleeding, should the patient suffer from a haemorrhage.
Spontaneous Deep Vein Thrombosis
If a patient is suffering from a sudden onset of swelling in the lower leg, calf or groin it is essential that they be referred or diagnosed by a medical professional for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) treatment.
Deep vein thrombosis can be easily treated, if correctly diagnosed by a medical professional. Failing to identify a relatively small case of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can result in serious and even fatal consequences for the suffering patient.
