Erb's Palsy Explained

Erb's palsy is paralysis of the arm which is caused by an injury to the main nerves of the upper arm.  These are part of the brachial plexus - a network of nerve fibres running from the spine, through the neck and into the arm.  When the baby's shoulder is stuck behind the pelvic bone and excessive force is used to deliver the baby it is commonly known as shoulder dystocia.

There are specific types of damage to the baby's nerves which can cause Erb's palsy.  These are:

•    Neuropraxia - stretching or damage to the nerve in the shoulder
•    Avulsion - the nerve being torn away from the spine
•    Neuroma - when the nerve tries to repair itself and scar tissue prevents nerve from functioning fully
•    Rupture - tendon is torn in a different location to the spine

The result of medical negligence when delivering the baby can mean your child may have limited use of their arm throughout their life.  Often the consequences are a lifetime of expensive treatment which could otherwise have been avoided.

If you believe your child's Erb's palsy was caused by medical negligence we would like to hear from you today.  Our medical negligence solicitors are highly experienced in Erb's palsy claims and will ensure the best possible outcome for your claim.
