INFANT; EYE INFECTION; LOSS OF VISION

£50,000 for loss of vision in left eye of 7 month old girl

B V HUDDERSFIELD NHS TRUST (2001)

Aged 6 months B was sent by her GP to hospital with high fever, and vomiting. She was prescribed Calpol and discharged. B was readmitted to hospital later that evening with high temperature and vomiting however was discharged two days later.

B was readmitted to hospital four days later with ongoing fever. She was noted to have discharge from her eye and a swab was taken. She was discharged.

B was taken to her GP two days later by which time her eye was red and closed. She was given antibiotic eye drops.

B was readmitted to hospital two days later with ongoing fever and noted to have probable serious loss of vision.

B lost the vision in her eye. The prognosis for B's unaffected eye was good.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was B's case that given her ongoing infection she should have been treated with intravenous antibiotics and referred to an ophthalmologist when the hospital noted the discharge from her eye.

CAUSATION

It was B's case that earlier intravenous antibiotics would have saved her vision.

OUTCOME

The hospital denied the claim however the claim was settled with approval of the Court for £50,000.
