GP; INCORRECT PRESCRIPTION


D V VARIOUS GPS (2005)

£10,000 for incorrect repeat prescription to 38 year old man.

Aged 38 D suffered from a heart condition and took amongst other drugs slow release potassium.

D transferred GP. The slow release potassium was substituted for slow release sodium.

Over a period of 8 months D suffered from swollen legs, water retention, muscle cramp, breathing difficulties and became immobile. D was admitted to hospital for treatment for low potassium levels.

The incorrect prescription was identified and D recovered.

BREACH OF DUTY

That the GP failed to properly prescribe potassium.

CAUSATION

D suffered from potassium deficiency.

OUTCOME

The GPs accepted liability. The case was settled without trial for £10,000.
