PRESSURE SORES; LOWER LEGS AND FEET:£65,000

R V ST HELENS NHS TRUST

Aged 37 R developed grade 1 pressure sores to her sacrum, occiput, and Achilles tendon areas and injury to her sural and medial plantar nerves during a lengthy elective operation.

The pressure sores healed within a few months however R was left with symptoms of nerve damage including burning pain and numbness in her calves ankles and feet.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was R's case that proper steps were not taken to prevent her suffering pressure injuries during her operation.

CAUSATION

It was R's case that proper nursing and anaesthetic care would have avoided her injuries. As a result of her injuries she had to change jobs as she was unable to carry out demanding tasks on her feet. She also required temporary assistance around the house and suffered from mild depression.

OUTCOME

Liability was denied however the case settled with a payment of £65,000.
