£30,000 following delay in diagnosis of slipped upper femoral epiphysis (hip)

G v Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust (2003)

FACTS

Aged 13 G suffered a fall.

At A&E he was unable to straight leg raise or flex and suffered from knee pain.

G's hip was not examined and he was discharged to physiotherapy.

12 weeks later G was diagnosed as having suffered a slipped upper femoral epiphysis.

G was treated by fixation of his hip by screw.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was G's case that the doctors should have considered not only knee injury by also hip injury in a teenager complaining of knee pain.

CAUSATION

It was G's case that proper examination following his fall would have diagnosed slipped upper femoral epiphysis.

That earlier treatment would have avoided subsequent leg length discrepancy and reduced the prospect of requirement for eventual hip replacement.

OUTCOME

Compensation was agreed without trial at £30,000
