Hysterectomy, failure to anticoagulate leading to multiple pulmonary emboli

B V Mr C (2004)

Aged 34 Mrs B underwent total abdominal hysterectomy.

Mrs B suffered from known clotting deficiency such that she was at greater risk of developing blood clots.

Mrs B was not anticogaulated before or during surgery and suffered multiple pulmonary emboli. Mrs B's lung function was reduced, she was at greater risk of further pulmonary emboli, her lung function would deteriorate as she aged.

BREACH OF DUTY

It was Mrs B's case that it was negligent of her surgeon, having been advised of the need to provide anticoagulation, to fail to do so.

CAUSATION

It was Mrs B's case that proper treatment would have avoided her pulmonary emboli.

OUTCOME

Liability was accepted and compensation agreed at £76,250
