Darbys Solicitors: Inquests in Civil Proceedings

Darbys Solicitors provide expert legal advice, support and guidance during the inquest process. Our team of lawyers and solicitors understand the issues surrounding the loss of a loved one and can help guide you through inquest proceedings and post-inquest enquires.

Civil Proceedings

The purpose of an inqest is to determine the cause of death.  An inquest is not designed to apportion blame.  However in certain situations the coroner may give a narrative verdict attributing the cause of death to actions or inactions by health professionals.

It is usual for treating doctors and nurses to be required to give oral evidence at the inquest.  This gives an opportunity to put questions to the witnesses and to assess their evidence which otherwise would not occur unless and until the civil claim came to trial.

Legal representation at the inquest can help in directing the coroner to the issues of concern to the family and in getting the medical staff to deal with the questions the family wish raised.
