Orthopaedic and trauma medicine involves a number of separate medical disciplines. Vascular surgeons, microbiologists, and neurologists are often involved in the care of orthopaedic patients.

Many of the failures in orthopaedic medicine occur due to lack of supervision of staff leading to delays in diagnosis, progression of serious conditions, and sometimes catastrophic outcomes in patients who would otherwise have recovered with minimal ongoing problems.

The failure to take a correct and detailed history from the patient, to fail to understand the context of the presentation and failure to examine and investigate the patient properly frequently lead to delays in diagnosis and ongoing disability.

Poor technique leads to failure of treatment, nerve and vascular damage, introduction of infection and in some patients again long term disability or death.
