What is a Scaphoid Fracture?
The scaphoid bone is the most common bone to break within the wrist and can be identified at the bottom of the thumb or when the thumb is in the "thumbs up” position. If a scaphoid fracture has occurred the pain or tenderness can be identified within this area, along with pain and swelling in the wrist.
The Accident and Emergency team should recognise these symptoms and signs of a scaphoid fracture and arrange for x ray. Please do read about the type of work we do in our Accident & Emergency negligence case studies on Scaphoid Fractures Claims.
If the patient does not receive the correct medical treatment by an Accident and Emergency medical professional, the consequences can lead to:
- nonunion necrosis - tissue death resulting from the bone failing to heal which may lead to the patient needing a bone graft.
- avascular necrosis - when the fracture results in poor blood supply to the bone which leads to the bone death.
- arthritis - over time, both nonunion and avascular necrosis can result in arthritis which causes long-term pain, decreased motion and trouble lifting and gripping objects.
