Spastic cerebral palsy

Spasticity may affect:

  • All limbs and the body (Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy) and is often associated with cognitive damage as well as damage to the brain centres which control the muscles.
  • The arm and leg on one side of your child's body (Hemiplegia). There will be stiffness of the arm and leg on the affected side and the affected limbs may not develop normally.
  • The lower limbs (Spastic Diplegia). Here your child's leg and hip muscles will be tight, there will be difficulties with walking.

Cerebral palsy is a non evolving injury.  The damage to your child's brain will not become worse, although in the long term your child's level of ability may deteriorate due to joint damage and constant tightness. Physiotherapy is very important in relieving the extent of spasticity and preventing long term joint and muscle complications.

We have helped many families with children with spastic cerebral palsy investigate the medical care provided during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and in the newborn period. It is frequently possible to identify medical mistakes which have led to the brain damage which causes spastic cerebral palsy and to succeed in a compensation claim for damages to meet the child's lifetime needs.

Darby's clinical negligence solicitors can undertake a full investigation into your and your child's care and advise you on whether your child's cerebral palsy was caused by medical negligence.

Please do read IA's story to see how we have helped him and his family and see how we could do the same for you.
