A spinal cord abscess or epidural abscess, develops from a build up of pus between the spinal cord and the outer covering of the spine.  The pressure causes pain and limits the signals travelling along the spine leading to reduction in limb function.

Delays in diagnosis and treatment of spinal cord abscess can lead to long term paralysis.  At Darbys we are regularly approached by people who have attended and reattended Accident & Emergency with symptoms increasing symptoms of spinal cord abscess and who have not been properly investigated.  Classic failures include:

  • Failure to diagnose & recognise symptoms: bowel or bladder incontinence, difficulty urinating (urinary retention), fever and back pain, reduced limb function are common symptoms a spinal cord abscess.
  • Failure to examine: serious accidents, boils on the skin (especially on the back or scalp) or complication of lumbar puncture increase the risk that the patient is suffering from a spinal cord abscess.
  • Failure to refer for testing: CT scans, MRI scans and examinations of cerebrospinal fluid can help to confirm or refute a differential diagnosis including spinal cord abscess.

If you have suffered a delay in diagnosis and treatment of evolving spinal cord abscess as the result of Accident and Emergency negligence you may well be eligible to make a claim for compensation.  Please contact a Darbys specialist medical negligence solicitor on 0800 524 4349 or complete our online Contact Form  to speak to a member of the medical negligence team.
